How God Measures Success

Today's message will focus on God's Definition of Success.  Success is such a loaded word; it reminds me of the instructions my dad gave me when pheasant hunting for the first time, "Son, just point and squeeze the trigger of that 20 gage shotgun and you'll hit something!" I discovered my dad's advice to be right on!  In fact, I'm sure a number of images and ideas shot from your mind when triggered by the word "success"!

For the last several months the Overseer Board and the Strategic Leadership Team have been plowing through an insightful book written by Don Cousins titled, Experiencing Leadershift Together.  The book identifies worldly leadership heresies endangering the church and encourages letting them go in order to embrace biblical leadership truths.  Don's a straight shooter and it's a great read.

Chapter three of Leadershift is titled, The Success Heresy.  Cousins rightly makes clear that God doesn't measure success by numbers or the "bottom line" as often alluded to in the marketplace and church alike. Rather, God's definition of success is based on four words that begin with the letter "f".  They are:

Faithful - are you faithful with the time, money and spiritual gifts God has give you?
Fruitful - are you bearing the spiritual fruit of Christ's character and Christ's influence?
Fulfilled - are you experiencing the joy that Jesus spoke of as recorded in John 15:11?
Making God Famous - is your lifestyle bringing glory to God?

Michaela Langlais, Aimee Burch and Mike Metkowski and I are very excited to share the message this morning about these fours words and how they provide a biblical framework for measuring success!  And please know that the four words for success translate very nicely into your private and vocational life.

On the victory side,

Dave
