Jesus Rocks: Kingdom Authority

Hang on as we continue traveling through the first chapter of Colossians. Today, our Jesus Rocks series will land us on the last two verses of Paul's eleven verse prayer (Colossians 1:3-13). We've broken this prayer into three sermons:

  • First Message (verses 3-8): Jesus Rocks because our eternal destination is secure in Him and in Him we place our Hope!
  • Last Sunday (verses 9-12): Jesus Rocks because He actually modeled the power of praying for others (John 17:6-26) and the prayer in the first chapter of Colossians is a model prayer for us to pray over others!
  • This morning (verses 13-14): Jesus Rocks because he rescued us from the dominion of darkness and into the Kingdom of Light!
We will be centering on two transformational verses from Colossians 1:13-14:
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Kingdom refers to more than the future millennial kingdom, when Jesus will reign on earth for a thousand years. Nor do these verses speak of merely the general rule of God over His creation. The above verses speak of this kingdom as a spiritual authority we have under the sovereign rule of a loving God!

Paul gives us a spiritual definition of this kingdom in Romans 14:17: "The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." The kingdom is the special relationship men and women in this age have with God through Jesus Christ. A kingdom in its most basic sense is a group of people ruled by a king. Christians have acknowledged Christ as their king and are subjects in His kingdom. They have been transferred...to the kingdom of His beloved Son. The Greek literally reads, "the Son of His love" (tou huiou tes agapes autou). The Father gives the kingdom to the Son He loves, then to everyone who loves the Son (Luke 12:32)

So hang on as we dig into God's Word regarding our Kingdom Authority as subjects of the King of Kings! Jesus certainly does Rock!

On the Victory Side,
