What's a Family For?

Today we are starting a new sermon series titled: The Family Channel. The title fits for a number of reasons, but at the top of the list would be my understanding of what it means to be a "tuned in parent". Believe me...I've come a long ways in my parenting. For example, in my early parenting days I had the Beatles philosophy of parenting - all you need is love. I really thought that if I just love my kids they will listen and obey and be great kids. Was I sadly mistaken!

Please know Ann and I have great kids, but we've come to realize it takes more than love to usher health into those under our care...it also takes a lot of prayer and a healthy dose of God's wisdom. Proverbs 24:3 says, "A house is built by wisdom and becomes strong through good sense." I'm not claiming parenting is easy, in fact parenting is the most difficult task known to humankind! A number of years ago James Dobson wrote a book called Parenting isn't for Cowards, and I fully agree. Nothing compares - no job, no career, can possibly compare to the awesome responsibility of raising a human being. There's nothing in the same sphere, even in the same category. It is not by accident that the beginning of the parenting process is a thing called labor. It's tough being a parent.

As we begin to go to God's Word for counsel, please remember that there is no such thing as a perfect parents or perfect kids. The only perfect person to walk the face of this earth is Jesus Christ. And it is to Him and His Word we go to find tools to help us tune into what it truly means to be a healthy family.

On the Victory Side,

Dave
